Makongo Forest is also known as Makongo Forest/Makongo Forest Reserve. It is located at an elevation of 1,076 meters above sea level.It is in the Makongo Valley. The Valley is 35 Kms South of Machakos Town. Most striking feature is the 30 kms Long Winding Drive, Steep and Plied with Twists & Turns along the saddle of the hills, which offers Spectacular Scenes of Undulating Hills covered by Forests and Terraces. Makongo Valley’s Panoramic Viewing Point (GetAway Resort) at the foot of the hill has been well constructed with a visionary touristic focus. You will also appreciate the beauty of this marvelous countryside. The forest is a home of wildlife animals & birds.
Mount Longonot is an extinct volcano that rises from the floor of the Great Rift Valley. Its name is derived from the Maasai word 'Oloonong'ot' meaning "mountains of many spurs" or "steep ridges". The crater of the mountain provides a unique spectacular view from the top due to the thick forest lying within it. The rim also provides great scenic view across the Rift Valley all the way to L. Naivasha. The park has a wide array of wildlife attractions including Buffalos, Elands, Zebras, Grants Gazelle, Leopard and Giraffe that one cannot fail to spot during the hike up the mountain.
Ngong Hills can be found a short distance from the city centre of Nairobi and is easily accessible by car. The hiking route starts from the northern side, at 1,961m (6,400ft) above sea level.
